Bedsheets
Obviously, the first thing that needs your attention is the bedsheets. You need to start with a fitted bedsheet. However, after that, you don’t call it a day. You add a flat sheet over it. The reason we add two layers is because if the flat sheet moves, the fitted sheet stays beneath it.
Also, two layers keep the bed cooler. This applies to all bed styles, whether its four posts, bookcase, or even handcrafted bed swings.
Duvets and Coverlets
Now that the sheets are in place on the bed, it’s time to add coverings, like a coverlet or duvet, ideally both. The reason we use both is so that you have an option of using one or both as you sleep and secondly because it looks great.
First, we add a coverlet that we like because of its texture, feel, color, pattern, or all of the above on the bed. We can fold it in half or fold a pillow’s width from the top. On top of that, we can layer our duvet. Fold the duvet in half and then fold the top back. It would create a raised edge that looks appealing.
Another way you could go about this is by adding the duvet first and folding it as described, and then layering the folded coverlet over that under the raised fold. With the first look, we see more of the duvet with the coverlet peaking from the top. In this second way, we see the coverlet pattern while the duvet peeks through from beneath.
Pillows
The final things that go onto a styled bed are the pillows. Pillow layering is a must. You need to have two sleeping pillows to start, then at least two sham pillows. Place the sleeping pillows either vertically against the headboard or horizontally along the mattress. Both looks are acceptable. Layer them with the sham pillows for depth.
With a coverlet, duvet, sleeping pillows, and sham pillows, your bed is already styled. However, with the addition of decorative pillows, you take it to the next level. You need some large and small lumbar pillows with some small euro style pillows.
The standard thing to do is take two small lumbar pillows with two more euro pillows with a small center piece pillow. First adding the euros, then the lumbars, then the final decorative pillow. Though you can have fun layering and mixing and matching the pillows however you want. The more the pillows, the merrier the bed.
